Did you know that Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender History Month takes place every year in February?

Redbridge College are marking this occasion by celebrating the lives and achievements of the LGBT community through a timeline.

Look out for new facts every week during this month!

1951
Medical 'cures' for homosexuality (often offered to men convicted of sexual offences instead of a jail sentence) include electric shock treatment, hallucinogenic drugs, aversion therapy and brainwashing techniques. The last such lobotomy is carried out in 1951.

1963
The first gay rights demonstration took place in the USA in New York, protesting about discrimination in the military.

1965
A UK opinion poll finds that 93% of respondents see homosexuality as a form of illness requiring medical treatment.

1966
Harry Benjamin publishes The Transsexual Phenomenon arguing for the acceptance of 'sex change' surgery, but distinguishing between transvestitism and transsexuality. This is one of the first uses of the word 'transsexual' and the first work to distinguish transsexuality from transvestitism as well as this coining the term 'gender dysphoria'.
